Indian Head Massage

Champissage

Definition

Champissage - the term champissage comes from the Hindu word "champi" meaning head massage. It is where the word "shampoo" comes from. It combines vigourous techniques used by Indian barbers to stimulate the scalp with the gentle, flowing strokes performed by women to keep their hair strong and healthy.

What is Indian Head Massage?

The techniques of Indian Head massage are based on the ancient Ayurvedic system of healing. It has been used in India for a thousand years as a form of bonding and nurturing between family members. Dr Narendra Mehta, a trained physical therapist, adapted these techniques & incorporated them into his UK practice. It soon gained popularity in both the corporate & home environment due to its simplicity & effectiveness.

It is a wonderfully relaxing therapy that relieves the stress and tension of modern day living. Anger, stress & tension often build up in the upper body- back, shoulders, neck and head regions. During a session these areas are gently, firmly and rhythmically massaged until the pressure begins to melt away.

At the physical level a treatment can alleviate muscle tension, increase oxygen supply to the cells and stimulate lymphatic drainage.

At a spiritual level it focuses on balancing and clearing blockages in the chakra energy centres to release negative energy and promote a feeling of calm.
